Cardinals pull two Big deals

St. Louis finalizing roster for another Playoff Push

(FTD, St. Louis)

July 23, 2023

The Cardinals organization made a pair of moves to attempt to solidify their roster. George Springer has been traded for 24 year-old Starting Pitching prospect Tanner Burns. Springer 33, brings tons of accolades to the fold (3x All-Star, 2 Silver Slugger, World Series MVP). "George has a resume that speaks for itself. We wanted to add another everyday veteran to our lineup. His power & glove combo should help us" said Cardinals GM Jonathan Ferguson.

Springer is coming off a bad concussion that had put his 2023 season to a halt. He now feels he's recovered and ready to go. "It's been tough, I'm so ready to go. I want to thank this Organization for putting their trust in me."

The Cardinals also went out and grabbed a talented veteran arm in Vince Velasquez from the Phillies. In another one for one move, St. Louis sent 24 year-old 1B prospect Elehuris Montero to Philadelphia. Velasquez 31, has put together a solid Major League career over 8 years. "We've been targeting Vince for a while now. It took some time but we were able to get it done. I just think he will be a good fit with our ball club. He's a swing arm that gives our pitching staff some much need flexibility" said Ferguson.

The Cardinals who are in a tight heated race with the Brewers sit at 48-35 and currently a 1/2 game up in the Division.
