(FTD, St. Louis)
The Cardinals received some rough news on Wednesday as Giancarlo Stanton was placed on the IL with Inflammation in his right Elbow. The injury will put him on the shelf for around 3 weeks. Stanton has been the best player for the Cards in 2023.
St. Louis will turn to Bryan Lizardo to fill the void. Lizardo 25, will make his Major League debut against the Cubs. The switch-hitting Lizardo was purchased out of the Independent leagues in 2022. He was originally signed to a professional International deal with the Toronto Blue Jays at the age of 15 in 2013. Since joining the St. Louis Organization he has done nothing but hit at all minor league levels.
The initial plan is for him to play 3B and let Nolan Gorman get some reps at Shortstop. "We want to get Nolan some work at Shortstop in this short-term transition. Bryan is a kid we've liked since we found him in the Indy leagues. He has power from both sides of the plate and can play a solid Third Base. I understand we're in a good race with the Brewers, but our goal is always to be building depth for our future. We just feel its important to continue to build versatility within our organization" said Cardinals GM Jonathan Ferguson.
